Up until late last week, Xperia PLAY users were eagerly awaiting for the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update to become available on their handset, however, today, their hopes have been dashed as the Xperia Play has been dropped from the upgrade list.
In Sony Mobile’s update, the Blog Manager revealed:
“After extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.”
I can understand this as the ROM for the PlayStation module must be very complicated and with ICS’s new belief of ‘less customization from manufactures’ I can imagine this being an uphill task. Sony has also said that the hardware is not up to the challenge, which is surprising as one would have thought they would’ve put the top hardware into a gaming phone.
This decision has not been well received, especially in America where the PLAY has only been on sale since September and so those that bought it on a 24 month contract must not be looking forward to those two years without an Ice Cream Sandwich to munch on. It has led to a moment of unpopularity for Sony but I am sure that they will be able to bounce back, the new phones that they are launching seem to get better and better…
We here at Sony Fanatic can also reveal that Sony do not intend to, at the moment, make the Xperia PLAY 2. At the Open Mobile Summit in London, this weekend, Steve Walker (Head of Marketing) said:
“Bringing the PlayStation Network to other devices is important. Doing so creates a community based relationship with customers, like those found on social networking web sites”
Which does imply that Sony is intent on making all round devices rather than gaming phones. This is sad news as the PLAY really did try and push things forward and Sony managed to get great games on to the phone (such as Fifa and Minecraft), it is just such a shame it didn’t work out. I wonder if Cyber-shot and Walkman phones will be the next to go…
